About the Workshop
This workshop opens a new strand of LIBSENSE work on Responsible Research Governance (RRG): what it means to govern research responsibly within African institutions, beyond how research is made open or how it is assessed.
Governance provides the structural framework and rules under which research happens, including how it is assessed. LIBSENSE's recent work on Responsible Research Assessment (RRA) shows this directly: assessment reform depends on institutional governance that actively supports fair evaluation cultures, not governance that leaves metric-driven pressures unchecked.
RRG names that wider frame and extends it beyond assessment to the institutional, ethical and infrastructural conditions under which research as a whole is conceived, conducted and shared.
Four areas have been identified as a starting point for discussion: research data governance, research ethics and care, the responsible use of generative AI, and institutional research practice. These are offered as opening questions. This workshop is where they will be tested, and where participants will determine whether they should be reshaped, extended, or reconsidered.
The workshop also marks an early point of engagement with the research administrator community, whose role in institutional governance is central to how responsible research practice takes hold.
