Internet2, the US member-owned advanced technology community, was founded over 20 years ago, in response to a demand from US leading higher education institutions. In 1996, thirty-four university leaders committed to establishing a project to foster the development of networking capabilities that would not only advance research and education, but also eventually make their way into the global commercial Internet. Since then, Internet2 has played a vital role in connecting people, networks, technologies and solutions across the broader research and education ecosystem. The organization goes beyond the world’s fastest network to include growing an extensive portfolio of end-to-end network services and trust and identity capabilities–for the benefit of educators and researchers across the world.

This presentation would present a shortened look at Internet2’s history, business model, and use cases of the network. In particular, the session would focus on Internet2’s most recent priorities: the upgrade of Internet2’s advanced network, the development of identity and access management services, and the international impact and significance of these activities. Furthermore, special attention will be given to the strong relationship between WACREN and Internet2, showcasing the existing collaboration program and work that has been done to identify and support research and education collaborations between respective member institutions. The lead speakers will also cultivate a discussion among the audience about present and future collaboration opportunities.
