ATI-4: Eko-Konnect Model Campus Network Bootcamp

Africa/Lagos
Owen Iyoha (Eko-Konnect), Richard Dele Amire (Network Infrastructure & Services Technologies Ltd (NgNOG))
Description

The Africa Training Initiative (ATI), a collaborative training program by the three regional RENs, recognizes the role of the campus network as the fundamental building block of NRENs and promotes training that results in technical documentation that helps to extend R&E network access for users in a reliable and pervasive manner.

The aim is to share information, experiences and provide support to help campuses meet their network challenges and by so doing strengthen the host communities and increase researcher visibility for more participation in NREN and global R&E activities.

The Eko-Konnect Research and Education Initiative (Eko-Konnect) and the Lagos State University (LASU) have partnered to host an ATI workshop in collaboration with the Nigerian Network Operators Group (ngNOG)

Workshop Objective

The objective of this workshop is to prepare the students for the deployment of the ATI model campus network, and apply participatory design techniques to develop templates  for the rapid deployment and maintenance of a managed WLAN offering secure network authentication and an identity provider for participation in the NgREN identity federation and edugain

Workshop Goal

To teach the principles and elements of the design and deployment of low-cost controller-based WLAN Infrastructure including authentication and roaming with eduroam

The first days will cover campus networking best practices, wireless networking design essentials, security considerations and local REN perspectives.  Subsequent days will involve design sessions and a network clinic to produce requirements for the deployment of a scalable wireless LAN in the LASU campus. This will be based on reports from a network audit and site survey previously undertaken by ngNOG instructors.

Targeted Audience

Primarily Network Administrators and Engineers from LASU, Eko-Konnect, ZIk-Konnect and other campuses in NgREN who are responsible for network planning and management but other RENs are welcome to apply.

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge of the UNIX/Linux command line environment
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking
  • Each participant is self-sponsored and expected to bring a laptop

Logistics

  • Selected participants are responsible for their travel and welfare
  • Lunches and coffee breaks will be provided for participants for the duration of the
    workshop

Deadline for application is 16 April 2018.    Successful applicants will be notified the following day.
