Description

This immersive and transformative workshop stems from the successful collaboration between WACREN and ICTP in Ghana. The installation of IoT-based sensors at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) premises in Accra marked the inception of a regional network. These battery-powered sensors utilise the LoRAWAN protocol to gather crucial weather-related data at the deployment sites. The collected data is seamlessly transmitted in the GMet case to a gateway device situated on a mast tower at the University of Ghana, Legon campus, showcasing the pivotal role of NRENs in scientific data collection, as detailed in our comprehensive whitepaper.

Building on this success, the strategic partnership with the Solid waste, Water, and Environmental Chemistry (SwWECh) research group of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Studies (IEES) at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, extends the program to Nigeria in advancing scientific knowledge and technological innovation in environmental monitoring and data collection with a focus on the deployment of IoT-based sensors for real-time pollution monitoring in surface water bodies.

The SwWECh research team will replicate the impactful activities of days 2 and 3 at a second site for the Eleyele River in Ibadan (Oyo state) and a third site in Ogun state for the Ogun River during the week of February 26- 29, 2024.
